Fishtech Honored Alongside Members of Private Industry Group Fighting BEC Phishing
The BEC List Receives 2018 M3AAWG JD Falk Award
Kansas City, MO (Oct. 9, 2018) — As a member of a private working group, Fishtech Group was honored today as part of the 2018 JD Falk Award from the Messaging, Malware and Mobile Anti-Abuse Working Group (M3AAWG). The BEC List, an ‘under the radar’ industry group, has helped prevent millions of dollars in fraud and assisted in taking down thousands of threat actor accounts by working to intercept and prevent criminal activity and deceptive internet infrastructure that use phishing emails and fake social media activities to attract victims.
“Business Email Compromise, or BEC, is an umbrella term for one of the most pervasive and troublesome cyber threats,” said Fishtech CISO Eric Foster. “As a group, we have stopped malicious emails and malware, interdicted real estate, romance, IRS, W2, and lottery scams, and helped freeze money ‘mules’ used to transfer illicit funds.”
“I’m proud that Fishtech has been able to participate in sharing resources, expertise and information to help protect numerous organizations and individuals from becoming scam victims,” Foster said. “We’ve not only helped protect our CYDERES Managed Detection and Response clients, but we’ve come together as a unified force across multiple companies to help make the Internet a better place.”
BEC fraud accounts for more than $12 billion in losses globally and threatens users in 150 countries.
The private working group includes more than 530 cybersecurity professionals from Fortune 500 companies, leading threat research organizations, information security firms, and internet infrastructure companies — including Fishtech technology partners Crowdstrike, Flashpoint, Gigamon, Palo Alto Networks, Proofpoint, Sophos, and Symantec. Law enforcement participants include the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service Online Fraud Detection and Prevention group, the U.S. Secret Service, and other entities.
M3AAWG is where the industry comes together to work against bots, malware, spam, viruses, denial-of-service attacks and other online exploitation. M3AAWG (www.m3aawg.org) members represent more than one billion mailboxes from some of the largest network operators worldwide. The group presents the JD Falk Award annually to recognize a project that helps protect the internet and embodies a spirit of volunteerism and community building.
